One on one with Shirley Mangalindan, Chief Audit Executive and Head of Global Internal Audit for the Americas

In this section, we take you behind the scenes of MUFG around the world, through the lens of a colleague. Shirley Mangalindan from the Americas explains her role and gives us a peek into her life outside work.

Q. What is your focus in your current role?

Shirley Mangalindan, Chief Audit Executive and Head of Global Internal Audit for the Americas
A. Internal audit partners with teams across the First and Second Lines of Defense to ensure the effectiveness of the bank’s risk management, governance, and internal control processes. Our audit teams have an in-depth understanding of the bank’s systems and processes, and regularly review and report on the adequacy, design, and effectiveness of the bank’s control environment. This function also operates independently to ensure objectivity.

Q. What message do you have for your colleagues?

A. Our three lines of defense are critical to how we do business. Over time, the composition of our products and services may change, but our mission will not. Internal Audit will continue to evolve to suit the company’s risk profile, serving as a trusted advisor and an agent of organizational change. We strive to be more efficient in our audit processes by strengthening our knowledge and deepening our collaboration with business partners. The more we know, the better our counsel is on how to avoid or mitigate risks. The future is bright. I am energized by our work and look forward to what lies ahead.

Q. How do you spend your time outside of work?

Shirley's family picture
A. It is vital for all of us to be able to step away from the daily grind and focus on our wellbeing. I reenergize by being in nature, enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking, and practicing yoga. Spending time with my family and friends, enjoying culinary and cultural events brings me enjoyment as well. Last year, my husband and I celebrated 25 years together, and we are blessed with two sons, ages 22 and 20 at that moment.
