MUFG Way -Colleagues Stories 2025

A collection of stories from across the globe

Since the establishment of the MUFG Way in April 2021, colleagues are connecting MUFG’s Purpose with their work, putting their own MUFG Way to practice.

What is the significance of MUFG’s existence?

Who do we want to empower while working at MUFG?

Here, we will be hearing from colleagues all over the world on how they empower a brighter future every day.

“I’m dedicated to unlocking human potential to empower a brighter future”
Fabiola Abdalla
Human Resources, MUFG Brazil

Fabiola Abdalla

For more than 20 years, I’ve dedicated my career to unlocking human potential and driving organizational success. At MUFG, I’ve found a truly inspiring environment that aligns perfectly with my passion.

I’ve worked in several industries, and today I am very grateful to work in financial services. There is a genuine environment to develop people and teams, with strong support from senior leadership. It’s a pleasure to share best practices with global HR teams and experience a rich cultural exchange. I learn every day.

Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to the bank’s growth by partnering with Brazil’s leadership to relaunch the Corporate Academy. This is an MUFG program that fosters continuous learning and development. I’m also proud of the work we’ve accomplished to establish a robust Diversity, Equity and Inclusion framework.

From my point of view, the MUFG Way brings key elements for a workplace: Integrity and Responsibility, Professionalism and Teamwork, Challenge and Growth. Each of these represent the bank's commitment to creating a brighter future by supporting its clients, colleagues, and communities.
Today, I feel fulfilled as MUFG’s purpose of "empowering a brighter future" feeds my sense of belonging and allows me to bring my professional purpose to life.

“Adhering to your core values, presenting your authentic self in the workplace, trusting your instincts, engaging actively, and enjoying your work will demonstrate that MUFG is an excellent place to be.”
Thomas Kainamura
Director and Team Lead, Asset Based Finance – GCIB NY, MUFG Bank

Thomas Kainamura

My banking career spans nearly 25 years, focusing on Asset Based and Cash Flow Lending. For the past seven years, I have been with MUFG after gaining valuable experience at other global financial institutions.

Currently, I serve as a Director and Team Leader in the Asset Based Finance (ABF) group within GCIB in New York. In this role, I manage a diverse credit portfolio of Large Corporate and Middle Market clients, both domestic and international, serving broad industries (i.e. Consumer & Retail, Equipment Rental, Manufacturers, etc.) and primarily below investment grade.

My expertise includes monitoring, underwriting, structuring, and negotiating legal documentation. I collaborate with product partners to cross-sell MUFG’s products and services. I continually seek ways to improve processes for greater team efficiency.
Throughout my career, I have focused on several key pillars that I believe are fundamentally important and have been imparted to me by many great mentors and leaders.Firstly, I am committed to achieving excellence in my role and continuously enhancing my skills.  Secondly, I strive to maintain politeness, respect, and humility while networking with diverse colleagues outside my immediate team or line of business to foster a collaborative environment. Thirdly, I actively engage in volunteer activities both within and outside the bank to improve the community and the bank itself. Lastly, I leverage my experience, knowledge, and network to assist others in achieving their success.

MUFG has offered a supportive environment and managerial encouragement that have enabled me to successfully embody these principles. I hope others can identify their own foundational elements to achieve success.

“Smile. Challenge. Grit!”
Natsuko Endo
Senior Manager, Global Affairs Office, Corporate Planning Division, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Holdings

Natsuko Endo
I always value smiling and being in a good mood (Smile), taking on new challenges with a sense of speed (Challenge), and achieving my goals (Grit). In my daily efforts to solve issues in managing overseas subsidiaries, I have realized that building trust comes from repeatedly approaching others with a smile and an open mind and following through until the end. While refining my English proficiency and deepening my cultural understanding, I am also taking on DEI initiatives that connect overseas and domestic operations. As a global liaison supporting MUFG's international strategy, I aim to strengthen our overseas business and become a driving force (Chikara) in its success.

"I challenge myself daily to collaborate with colleagues as much as possible, to capitalize on the strengths of the group, towards improving the servicing of my internal and external stakeholders."
Karim Faye
Vice President, Derivatives Solutions Group, MUFG Securities (Europe) N.V.

Karim Faye

I have been with MUFG for three years and a half, working in Derivatives Solutions Group. We service a diverse client base of Corporates and Project Finance customers across EMEA on their hedging needs. Prior to this, I worked in similar roles at other banks, and the main difference I noticed when I joined MUFG was the abundance of opportunities provided by the Group.

I try to be a culture carrier, reflecting the Group values, as much as possible, in my day to day activities, by keeping an open line of communication with all colleagues, and learning from them as often as possible. This is materialized through my participation in multiple forums, with internal and external stakeholders, allowing me to improve professionally and personally. These forums also serve as avenues for me to socialize the role of my team and the spectrum of products and services offered by MUFG. Such interactions create a climate of trust and openness within the Group and with clients, to foster collaboration.

"We should not squander so much time resisting adversities but weather them."
Irene Iu
Legal Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation, Hong Kong Branch

Irene Iu

I joined Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation’s Hong Kong Branch in 2014. My dual role of compliance officer and in-house counsel has never been a boring job over the past 10 years. It is indeed an extremely fulfilling work life.  I am grateful for having various opportunities to contribute to the bank with my knowledge and experience from previous appointments while acquiring new knowledge and skills to advance my personal development and support our bank’s business development in East Asia.

Owing to our geographical location, Hong Kong Branch is the closest office to Head Office’s data transmission and risk management systems. It is therefore apt for Head Office to test the launch of any new products and services through us. When providing compliance support to such projects, I do not squander so much time resisting adversities in the regulatory landscape. Instead, I have learned to build an emotional resilience and mental strength to face them, and I inspire fellow colleagues to do the same.

“An organization that truly fosters the growth of its staff is a sustainable organization, and this is the kind of organization I want to create.”
Dong Xiaochun
Managing Director, Head of Operations Division, MUFG Bank (China)

Dong Xiaochun

This year marks the 20th year since I joined MUFG. My main career experiences have been in sales, compliance, and branch management.

I recently took on a new mission, which involves transformation and challenges in an administrative area where I have had little experience. I had questioned myself on how to achieve a higher level of "multi-faceted” management capabilities. The conclusion I reached is to stay true to my principles. I understand this "principle" as a combination of positional responsibilities and values. Fulfilling positional responsibilities is straightforward and easy to understand, but what are values? I believe it is precisely doing the right thing.

During my time in sales, my principle was to meet the needs of our customers. In compliance, it was to maintain a balance between thorough compliance, smooth business operations, and reducing the burden on customers. Later, in a branch management function, my principle was to devise and promote strategies that effectively integrate sales and internal management. A common factor behind these was always considerations of measures that would bring happiness to my colleagues.
